WHAT IS BUDDHISM?
What is Nichiren Daishonin's True Buddhism?
What is NamuMyohoRengeKyo?
How does it relate to my life?
THERE ARE many misconceptions about Buddhism. For instance, Buddhism is not only a philosophy, it is a religion and a way of life. It is an ancient religion; the oldest in the world. It is the religion from which all religions have evolved. Buddhism is a religion that explains life and death, man's place, and the place of all living things in this world.
Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is based on NamuMyohoRengeKyo, the ultimate universal Law, and Nichiren as the True Buddha who realized and introduced this Law to the world. What does NamuMyohoRengeKyo mean?
Namu = devotion with your whole life-- body, mind, and soul.
Myoho = Mystic Law. Nichiren explains in "On Attaining Buddhahood" that myo "is simply the mysterious nature of our lives from moment to moment, which the mind cannot comprehend and words cannot explain. . . .Myo is the name given to the mystic nature of life, and ho to its manifestations."
Renge = cause and effect. Its symbol is the lotus flower which simultaneously manifests both its seed and its flower, indicating that cause and effect exist simultaneously. This is the wonder of the Law.
Kyo = sutra or teaching. Again, in "On Attaining Buddhahood" Nichiren states, "Once you realize that your own life is the Mystic Law, you will realize that so are the lives of all others. That realization is the mystic kyo, or [teaching]."
MyohoRengeKyo, is the Law of life and death. Every living thing can achieve enlightenment if they devote themselves to this mystic Law of cause and effect, because all life itself is NamuMyōhōRengeKyō. Everything possesses the life of Buddha. Because the Buddha’s life is in you, when you chant NamuMyōhōRengeKyō, which is the Buddha’s life, you awaken the Buddha’s life inside you.
