Nichiren Daishonin's True Buddhism

Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism is founded in the Lotus Sutra. The True Buddhist Law, Myoho-Renge-Kyo, is in fact, the title of this sutra transliterated from Chinese into Japanese. The essential purpose of Buddhism is not the study of the Buddha’s teachings, but to awaken the Buddha-nature in all of us through the practice of Myoho-renge-kyo.

The significance of the Lotus Sutra is emphasized in Chapter 23 of The Threefold Lotus Sutra:

This Law-Flower sutra, amongst all the sutras preached by Buddhas, is the profoundest and greatest. . . among all sutras it is the highest. . .among all sutras it is supreme. Just as the Buddha is king of the laws, so is it also with this sutra; it is king amongst all the sutras. . . .This sutra is that which can save all the living. . . .In the last five hundred years, after my extinction, proclaim and spread it abroad. .  . .
